Spirit Award - 12/17/2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 17, 2009

Capitol Hill – Commerce Secretary and Insurance Commissioner Michael J. Ada was recently awarded the 2009 Spirit Award by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners at the NAIC winter national meeting held in San Francisco, California from December 5-8, 2009.  The Insurance Commissioners of Guam, American Samoa and U.S. Virgin Islands are also recipients of the same award.

The Spirit Award, as given by the NAIC, recognizes a jurisdiction’s diligent pursuit of effective solvency regulation and dedication to the highest level of protection for consumers during the unprecedented financial crises of 2008-2009.

The Department of Commerce has been a member of the NAIC since 2006.  Each member is allotted annual grant funds for use primarily for onsite and online training as well as attendance of national meetings.  The national meetings serve as a forum for state regulators to discuss and keep abreast of current issues faced by the insurance industry.  The NAIC also offers professional designation scholarships and continuing education credits to full time state insurance department employees.

“I am honored and grateful to have been given such an award.  Given our very limited resource for staffing, the NAIC serves as a tremendous resource to our department in terms of insurance regulation.  We look forward to maintaining our membership and increasing our participation with the organization” said Ada.
