TSUNAMI WARNING AND EVACUATION ORDER

IN EFFECT FOR NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS

For Immediate Release:
 
The tsunami waves generated by the major earthquake in Chile are expected to reach the shores of the CNMI within the next few hours. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) estimates the first wave will arrive in the CNMI at 1:00 PM, today, Sunday, February 28, 2010
 
In view of the imminent threat posed by a potentially destructive wave or waves, Acting Governor Eloy S. Inos has elevated the Tsunami Watch to a TSUNAMI WARNING for the entire Northern Mariana Islands as of 9:00 A.M. (ChST), Sunday, February 28, 2010.
 
Residents are advised to stay away from beaches and low-lying areas and to commence orderly evacuation to higher grounds.
 
To ensure the safety of everyone, motorists are advised to minimize traffic and limit travel to evacuation sites only.
 
Anyone staying in low-lying areas and along shorelines who do not have access to transportation should proceed to the nearest school bus stop to be picked up by Public School System buses providing transportation assistance.
 
IN ADDITION TO LOCAL MEDIA SOURCES, RESIDENTS MAY ALSO TRACK LOCAL UPDATES AT: www.cnmiemo.gov.mp AND www.cnmigov.net
 
 
THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICE, ALONG WITH PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER,  WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENTS AND WILL BE ISSUING NEW ADVISORIES THROUGH LOCAL MEDIA SOURCES AND NOAA WEATHER RADIO BROADCAST ON 162.5 MEGAHERTZ, THE EMERGENCY INFORMATION HOTLINE AT TELEPHONE NUMBER 322-0220 OR CNMI 211.

Ø Central – to China Town/As Falipe (or areas above W-2 Highway)
Ø South – to Gualo Rai (high elevation above McDonalds Restaurant or areas above W-2 Highway)
Ø Quarter Master – to Gualo Rai (or areas above W-2 Highway)
Ø Chalan Lao Lao to As Terlaje Hill(NMC CAMPUS)

CONSIDERATION: Vertical Elevation or evacuation areas at 30ft elevation should be a safe area route or zone.
